Councils of the region
Councils fully in the region:
- West Coast Regional Council
- Buller District Council
- Grey District Council
- Westland District Council
Representation reviews
All councils are required to review their representation arrangements (number of councillors, how they are elected etc.) at least every six years.
The following councils reviewed these arrangements prior to the 2019 local authority elections: West Coast Regional Council, Buller District Council, Grey District Council and Westland District Council.
As a result of appeals/objections/referral of proposals not complying with fair representation requirements, the Local Government Commission was required to make determinations on the following councils’ final proposals:
Each of the Councils is required to review their representation arrangements prior to the 2025 local authority election.
Local government reorganisation
In June 2015, the Local Government Commission received an application which it deemed to be for the establishment of a unitary authority covering the West Coast Region.
At West Coast reorganisation you can view the processes the Commission took to consider the application and subsequently determine, as its final proposal, that a combined district plan should be developed and adopted for the West Coast.
