Changing the Structure of Local Government

Guidelines to the reorganisation procedures of the Local Government Act. Reorganisation proposals may be made for:
  • altering the boundaries of a local authority district or region
  • transferring responsibilities from one local authority to another
  • uniting districts or regions
  • constituting a new district or region
  • abolishing any district or region
  • a territorial authority becoming a unitary authority (a territorial authority with the responsibilities of a regional council)
  • constituting communities.
