Councils of the region
Councils fully in the region:
- West Coast Regional Council
- Buller District Council
- Grey District Council
- Westland District Council
All councils are required to review their representation arrangements (number of councillors, how they are elected etc.) at least every six years.
The following councils reviewed these arrangements prior to the 2019 local authority elections: West Coast Regional Council, Buller District Council, Grey District Council and Westland District Council.
As a result of appeals/objections/referral of proposals not complying with fair representation requirements, the Local Government Commission was required to make determinations on the following councils’ final proposals:
Local government reorganisation
In June 2015, the Local Government Commission received an application which it deemed to be for the establishment of a unitary authority covering the West Coast Region.
At West Coast reorganisation application and West Coast reorganisation proposal you can view the processes the Commission took to:
- assess the application
- release a draft proposal for transfer to West Coast Regional Council of the district councils’ statutory obligations to prepare district plans and for the establishment of a joint committee of the four councils and local iwi to prepare and approve a combined West Coast district plan
- decide to adopt a final proposal based on the draft proposal.
